With Version 2.0, Eset has enhanced one of the world’s foremost virus detection products with greater control and flexibility, making it easier than ever for users to manage and detect incoming threats to their computers and computer networks.
Among the many improvements to NOD32 Version 2.0—actually the fourth generation of Eset’s original NOD32 technology—are the following:
- Advanced Heuristics – state-ot-the-art virus/worm/Trojan detection engine
- Windows 2003 Server operating system compatibility (testing included verification at Microsoft during its “Plugfest” event earlier this year)
- Fully Integrated Planner/Scheduler - A powerful new tool for managing key system tasks. With NOD32 v2.0’s new Planner/Scheduler, users can schedule automatic virus definition updates received over the Internet and/or LAN, scans, execution of external applications, log maintenance and much more, with tasks triggered either by event or time.
- Email Filter Improved — NOD32 v2.0 replaces POP3 filtering with a new and more nimble IMON (Internet Monitor) module (scanner), complemented by a special email scanner for MS Outlook and Exchange.
- New Quarantine Feature — Allows storage of infected, or potentially infected files in an encrypted format housed in a special user-defined directory.
- Better On-Demand Scanning—New options enable users to define scanning targets and rules for handling and/or quarantining infected objects.
- Central Log Management—NOD32 v2.0 provides easier-to-read event/scan logs, with messages on key events/alarms sent via SMTP or Windows Messenger to a predefined set of recipients.
- Enhanced Control Center — All operational modules of NOD32 are now fully integrated in the product’s central Control Center. Not only is user task management improved, but all relevant control parameters are password protected as well.
- New Graphical User Interface — In addition to a newer, cleaner look, NOD32 v2.0 features a single ‘red-cross’ icon that replaces the previous three system tray icons.
- Improved Installation Program — New installation program offers three pre-defined installation scenarios including a “standard” option for novice users.
“NOD32’s virus scanning ability has always led the industry. With Version 2.0, our product’s user controls have become cutting-edge as well,” said Miro Trnka, Eset’s chief technology officer.
Unprecedented 22nd VB100% Award
Since Eset began entering its NOD32 antivirus software in the VB100% Awards conducted by Virus Bulletin, the “Antivirus Industry Bible”, in May 1998, the company has earned an unprecedented 22 100% VB Awards. Analysts have confirmed the company’s claim to having the only product to never miss an “In the Wild” (ItW) virus during its Virus Bulletin testing.
NOD32’s effectiveness is due to its unique core technology that addresses both known and unknown viruses. Although there are at least 50,000+ viruses known to exist today, the most dangerous are new and ItW (In the Wild) viruses, i.e. the viruses that are active worldwide. In even few short hours it takes for labs to analyze, create and deploy patches, Internet “virus propagation time” enables ItW and new viruses to achieve worldwide infiltration and widespread damage.
NOD32 Version 2.0, by way of its advanced heuristic technology, provides state-of-the-art protection against both ItW and unidentified viruses. Heuristics enables NOD32 to detect virus-like activity, thereby automatically initiating action to isolate the infected files. NOD32’s remarkable detection rate enables it to do its job without impacting system performance—a major concern for many users.
Just as valuable, however, is the application’s scanning speed. NOD32 v2.0 possesses a throughput rate in excess of five million kilobytes/second, more than twice the speed of the next best product on the market. Most anti-virus products, in fact, scan at less than 800,000 kilobytes/sec.

Canon Partners in New Japanese Language Version
Eset has further extended its non-English language support via its new alliance with Canon System Solutions, Inc. of Japan. A new Japanese-localized version of NOD32 Version 2.0, developed in partnership with Canon, will begin appearing on store shelves throughout that country since June 25th.
Also benefiting Japanese users is a new Japanese implementation of NOD32 Version 2.0 for Dell™ Corporation’s PowerVault™ NAS 725N and 775N systems. The Dell PowerVault NAS (Network Attached Storage) products, introduced in both the U.S. and Japan, feature a variation of the NOD32 anti-virus software.
