A new ESET Remote Administrator (ERA) module update will roll-out as a background upgrade distributed via the ESET update servers. Below is a list of the minor changes:

• Support for new modules in ESET products. The ability to recognize, identify and display the names of modules included in new products or for upcoming new products.
• Updated Configuration Editor templates and a slightly updated configuration tree.
• Updated dialog window with information about new version of ERA after login to the console.

To verify that the Configuration Editor has the latest version of the templates, open the Help menu section About ESET Configuration Editor and look at the version of the template displayed in the parentheses to the right of the ERA version.

The version of the module corresponds to the ERA version you have installed. See below for a list of ERA versions and the corresponding module number.

ESET Mobile Security for Symbian has been updated to v1.3.2. ESET Mobile Security provides Symbian and Windows Mobile powered devices with anti-malware and anti-spam protection as well as anti-theft functionality, a security audit and a firewall. ESET Mobile Security replaces its predecessor, ESET Mobile Antivirus.

The new version is available in all released languages.

Changelog is as follows:

• Added support for Symbian 3 (Nokia devices only)
• Minor bugfixes and stability improvements

End of Life announcement for NOD32 version 2.7 server products. ESET will begin phasing out server products based on the ESET NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 engine on February 1, 2011. The server software will be removed from the ESET website and will no longer be sold beginning February 1, 2011. Customers with server products based on NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 will continue to be protected with signature updates until February 1, 2012. ESET customers should update to the current ESET software release to ensure that they continue to be safeguarded by the most effective proactive threat protection available.

ESET Mobile Security for Windows Mobile has been updated to v1.3.1670 and ESET Mobile Security for Symbian has been updated to v1.2.23. An issue with virus signature database update 5418, released on September 2, 2010 at 6:00 AM PST, may cause an error the "ekrn.exe" service. Other reported issues include ekrn crashing, systems not responding and threat notifications with blank name fields. This issue can be resolved by restarting the computer.

ESET Virus Signature Database Update 5358 may cause system slow-down issues

ESET is investigating a report of slow system usage on 64-bit database servers after Virus Signature Database Update 5358, released on August 11, 2010. While investigating the report, users were rolled back to an older module to bypass the issue. Virus Signature Database Update 5359 has been released to resolve this issue. Microsoft security update (KB2286198) for Windows 7 hangs or causes a BSOD on restart

If you are experiencing a system hang or blue screen error after attempting to install Microsoft security update (KB2286198), you will need to update your ESET security product. This issue is due to a potential conflict with the Windows update and ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security. Downloading a new ESET virus signature update (version 5338 and later) will resolve this issue. To update your ESET security product, click here.

ESET Authentication Server allows portable computers running ESET Smart Security v4.2 to verify which network they are connected to by the use of strong encryption or by adopting a configuration from the local network.  When a computer running ESET Smart Security connects to a new network, authentication ensures a secure network connection.

Microsoft has notified software vendors that a hotfix is now available for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 R2 to resolve a memory leak in Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). WFP is a technology Microsoft provides to developers of network, security and utility software for monitoring network traffic.

Some customers using ESET Smart Security on Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 may see an increase in program memory usage over time resulting in decreased system performance. The impact of this issue on clients is difficult to determine because it is based on the type and amount of network traffic performed, which varies from customer to customer.

A detailed description of the problem, along with instructions on how to obtain the hotfix, can be found in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #979223, "A nonpaged pool memory leak occurs when you use a WFP callout driver in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2." (NOTE: The hotfix can be requested from this page on Microsoft’s web site. Select "Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages" on the web page to view which platforms the hotfix is available for and to select them.)

ESET recommends customers request this hotfix from Microsoft and deploy it as soon as possible after verifying compatibility with their operating environments.

End of Life announcement for NOD32 v2.7. Current NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 customers can upgrade to ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for free. ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 offers the most current proactive protection technology, is easier to use and has more advanced options for power users. NOD32 Antvirus 2.7 customers will continue to be protected with signature updates until February 1, 2012, but are advised to upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible.

A new firewall module for ESET Smart Security has been released. ESET Personal Firewall module (v1054, build date 20091015) contains the following changes:

In the user interface, a new section under Setup → Personal Firewall → IDS and Advanced Options is now available named Vista/Windows 7 Services. In this section, the following new options are available:

• Add IPv6 addresses from Local network to the Trusted Zone (fe80::/64)
• Allow Web Services Discovery (WSD) in the Trusted Zone
• Allow multicast address resolution in the Trusted Zone (LLMNR)
• Windows 7 homegroup support

In addition to the features added to support Microsoft Windows 7, two new features have been added in the Zone setup:

• Addresses excluded from active protection (IDS) - Here you can enter the IP addresses of devices to exclude which perform unusual behavior that can produce attacks, but are otherwise trusted. An example of this is certain brands of residential broadband gateway routers and network printers which perform port scans in order to enumerate hosts on the network subnet. This behavior can be evaluated as an attack and blocked in some circumstances.
• Addresses allowed to receive a notification about the unavailability of TCP/UDP ports - IP addresses listed here will receive an RST from ESET Personal Firewall if a connection at the attempted port is blocked.

Users of ESET Smart Security do not need to perform any special activity to obtain the new module. It will be downloaded automatically the next time the software performs a virus signature database update.

ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server Public Beta 1 is now available.  ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server (EMSX) is a new product built on ThreatSense, the industry's most accurate proactive technology for detecting viruses and other malware, delivering proactive protection against zero-day threats and attacks. It features anti-spam protection, transport layer protection and support for additional server roles as well as a number of technological improvements, including:

• Improved antivirus and antispyware protection, based on the ESET NOD32 Antivirus v4 engine
• Anti-Stealth - technology to protect against rootkits
• Greylisting function and other techniques to verify the legitimacy of incoming messages and block unwanted ones at the mail server
• Both preset and customizable anti-spam profiles to provide the desired balance between detection and performance
• Self-Defense - protection against malware which may target ESET Mail Security
• Transport layer scanning - improved scanning of the email database
• Performance monitoring and statistics with graphical visualization
• Mailbox-specific rules - flexible rule-based quarantine of potentially infected messages and spam by recipients' addresses
• Improved graphical user interface, compatible with screen-reading software and High Contrast mode
• Time-saving system tools:  ESET SysInspector and ESET SysRescue simplify system diagnosis and cleaning of heavily-compromised systems

This beta test version is a precursor of the final product without full functionality and documentation.  It is intended for experienced Exchange Server administrators and should not be installed on mail servers that perform critical tasks because it may cause errors or crashes.

ESET Mobile Antivirus for Symbian OS Public Beta 1 has been released. This new program from ESET protects against a variety of threats for Symbian OS-powered smartphones. It is derived from ESET’s NOD32 Antivirus engine, which is available Windows Mobile, BSD, Linux and Windows platforms. ESET Mobile Antivirus contains the following features:

• Activation - performed online via graphic user interface
• Archive Scanning - variable in-depth scanning of archives
• Heuristics - pioneering proactive protection for mobile platforms
• Logs and Statistics - provides information about scanning tasks and virus signature database status as well as a report on scanning history
• On-Access Scanning - scans newly-created and opened files; scanning of files received via Bluetooth, IR and Wi-Fi
• On-Demand Scanning - scans running processes and storage (including specific subfolders); standardized logs

An updated ESET Personal Firewall module (v1052, build date 20090922) with support for Microsoft Windows 7 is now available to ESET Smart Security users for testing purposes. To obtain it, open the ESET user interface, press the F5 key to open the Advanced Settings window, select Update in the left pane, then Advanced Update Setup in the right pane and check Enable Test Mode at the bottom of the window.

The next time the client performs an virus signature database update, it will also download the updated module.

Microsoft has notified software developers that some of the technologies used by security, backup, disk utility and network management programs are incompatible with the Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade process. This is a direct result of Microsoft’s design decisions and impacts most antivirus solutions that scan network data.

ESET has verified that the Personal firewall module in both versions 3 and 4 of ESET Smart Security is affected. The problem only affects computers being upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista SP1 and SP2. Customers working with new installations of Windows 7 will not experience these problems, nor will customers upgrading from Windows XP (which performs a clean install).

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is not affected.

ESET is working closely with Microsoft as we approach the official launch of Windows 7 to address any potential compatibility issues and promptly communicate issues like this to our valued partners. Further information is available at http://www.eset.com/windows7upgrade.

Testing of the new Anti-Stealth module to improve compatibility between ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus v4.0 and Microsoft Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 has successfully completed and distribution has begun.  The updated module will be downloaded automatically when a virus signature database update occurs in ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

After the update is downloaded, the entry for the Anti-Stealth module in the About window for ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus v4 will appear as Anti-Stealth support module: 1012 (20090526)

If Anti-Stealth was disabled as a temporary workaround, re-enable it by opening the ESET Graphic User Interface, pressing the F5 key to open the Advanced Setup window, selecting Antivirus and Antispyware in the left navigation pane and enabling (checking) the Enable Anti-Stealth Technology option in the right pane.

ESET has received reports that, in some instances, Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 conflicts with ESET Smart Security 4.0 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0. The conflict results in the real-time file system protection in both programs and the Personal firewall in ESET Smart Security being disabled when the computer starts. When this occurs, the ESET icon next to the system clock turns red, notifying users that maximum protection is not ensured.

On Sunday, March 8th at 9:52PM PDT, ESET released an update of our heuristics module, v1091, together with standard virus signature database update number 3918. Unfortunately, an error in the heuristics module, coupled with the specific virus signature database update, caused ESET to incorrectly identify several Windows operating system files, including dllhost.exe and msdtc.exe, as being infected with Win32/Kryptik.JX.

Details:

• Some Windows files were flagged as infected.
• If the computer is not restarted once files are moved to quarantine then on the next update (virus signature database 3919) the changes to the module will be reverted and the computer will run fine.
• Virus signature database 3920 and later tell ESET v3 and v4 products to automatically restore the false positives from quarantine.
• For NOD32 v2.7, the false positive has to be removed manually, following the instructions in the Knowledgebase article, below.
• An error in synchronization during quality control resulted in a failure to properly test the new heuristic module with the new signature file prior to release. Process changes have been made to prevent this mistake from being repeated.

The update downloads were stopped within ten minutes of the update release, and the update was reverted to its previous version. Due to this immediate response, less than 5% of our users were affected.

Virus signature database update number 3919, was released at 1:00AM PDT (March 9th) which corrects the problem. We have released a knowledge base article describing this issue, which can be found http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2181.

Some users have experienced delays or were unable to download recent virus signature updates. Normally, ESET produces incremental updates to the virus signature database which are very compact in size, averaging about 10KB per day.

However, over time, these incremental updates become very large in size. ESET regularly releases a larger base signature update that aggregates these into one large update.

Unfortunately, a capacity issue on our server caused a delay in pushing out the latest large update package. ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0's updating mechanism is architected in such a way that users were able to download a much smaller update file; users of version 2.x were mostly impacted. Users with a valid NOD32 2.x license have always been able to upgrade to 3.x at no cost.

We anticipate that all users will have downloaded the update by now and ESET has made infrastructure changes to ensure that such capacity issues do not occur in the future.

3217, released at 3:29PM CET today, introduced a false positive alarm of "a variant of Win32/Exploit.MSWord.Smtag Trojan" on some Microsoft Word Document (.DOC) files. Distribution of signature update 3217 was paused and a fix issued with signature update 3218, released at 5:51PM CET.

Users who have been affected by this signature update should restore their Microsoft Word Document files from quarantine. This can be done by opening the ESET NOD32 Antivirus v3.0 or Smart Security User Interface, selecting Tools|Quarantine from the left pane, right-clicking on quarantined objects in the right pane, and selecting Restore from the popup context menu.

ESET Mobile Antivirus for Microsoft Windows Mobile devices Public Beta 1 has been released. This new program from ESET brings a feature set similar to the desktop version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus to the Windows Mobile platform, but as a Windows Mobile program it does not have the exact same feature set and will diverge over time as more Windows Mobile-specific functionality is added.

ESET Mobile Antivirus currently provides on-access protection and the ability to run on-demand scan. Additional features and functionality will appear in the future.

Currently supported platforms are:

• Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC
• Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smart Phones
• Windows Mobile 6 Classic
• Windows Mobile 6 Professional
• Windows Mobile 6.1 (preliminary)

This new version adds support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (x64) with a new model for the new anti-malware engine that allows it to run outside of Exchange Server 2007 as well as new scanning options, more granular rules and performance logging. NOD32 for Linux has been updated to v2.51.6. This release contains the following changes:

 

•Fixed issue with parsing email header for log files.
•Fixed issue with reporting emails not containing a body as having an archive which could not be scanned attached to them.

NOD32 for Linux has been updated to v2.51.5. This release contains the following changes:

 

•Increased the maximum number of embedded archives which can be scanned recursively.
•Increased the soft limits for the maximum amount of time files can be scanned.
•Increased the maximum size of archives which can be unpacked.
•Implemented quarantine functionality.
•Improved system scanning actions: The action_on_infected, action_on_uncleanable and action_on_notscanned options have been replaced with the clean, delete, accept, defer, discard and reject options.
•Enhanced qmail filter support for nod32pipe and nod32mda (including content filtering).
•Improved (pipelined) SMTP communication support in nod32smtp.
•Added support for logrotate to the internal daemon’s logging output.
•Added selective downloading of component modules groups in nod32umc.
•Reimplemented the samples submission process as an individual process automatically managed by the main daemon.
•Added mechanism to warn of license expiration.

We have begun testing NOD32 Intel-based Apple computers running Microsoft Windows XP using the beta test version of Apple’s Boot Camp disk partitioning software. No problems have yet been noted during testing, however, customers are advised to use caution when running under this beta test environment from Apple.

•Fix to active mode under Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64.

•The server balancing system has been changed to improve performance and reliability.
